The fame of this book, titled A Message to Garcia is amasing. Not only is considered the most read book in the world, but it has been translated into 37 different languages. In World War 2, every soldier was given a copy of this book. Why? Becuase the main character in this story showed a amazing amount of initiative.

This book takes place in the Spanish-American War. The American troops needed to contact a general in Cuba, by the name of Calixto Iñiguez Garcia. The president asked if anyone knew anybody who would take a message to Garcia. Somebody said,"There's a fellow by the name of Rowan will find Garcia for you, if anybody can." And there's our main character, Andrew Summers Rowan. Rowan was summoned, and he put it into a oilskin pouch and strapped it over his heart. In four days, he landed off the coast of Cuba. He then headed into the jungle, and stepped out three weeks later on the other side of the island. The manner of which he delivered the message to Garcia is not important. It's only that he did it, no questions asked. He didn't ask where Garcia was,how he was going to get there, or request any help. This is what Elbert Hubbard said, the author of A Message to Garcia said:
The point I wish to make is this: McKinley gave Rowan a letter to be delivered to Garcia; Rowan took the letter and did not ask, "Where is he at?" By the Eternal! There is a man whose form should be cast in deathless bronze and the statue placed in every college in the land. It is not book-learning young men need, nor instruction about this or that, but a stiffening of the vertebrae which will cause them to be loyal to a trust, to act promptly, concentrate their energies; do the thing - "carry a message to Garcia!"

If only everyone in this world had the initiative that Rowan had. This world would be a great place.

First and foremost, this analogy was created by my dad. We were driving in the car. I don't remember what caused the conversation. We were talking about what we do with our lives, and this is a version of what he said.

All of us start out with a big pile of rocks. Yes, just plain old rocks. It is what we do with these rocks that makes up our lives. Some take a rock, and hope to hit a rabbit for dinner with it. Others chip away at the rock to make arrowheads. With these, they can get dinner for a week. Others use those rocks to make furrows in the ground, and feed themselves over the whole winter with the crops they grow. Still others break up their rocks and heat them to get the minerals out of it. Some are formed into axes to build log cabins. Others create a hoe and shovel to make a even bigger garden and feed themselves for a year. Others create nails to make better houses. Still others create a scalpel that can cure cancer or other diseases and help others. I could go on and on. But, in our lives, when we start to reach our 60's, it is hard to start any new projects, and use those God given talents to help others. We start to look back on our lives and ask ourselves,"What did I do with my pile of rocks?" Don't get me wrong, you can still help people and do things, but by then, it is almost too late. Let's all use our pile of rocks wisely, and do not waste as many rocks doing things that won't grow our talents like video games, but use our rocks(and talents)for others.
